PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Project was designed to satisfy the water demand of the population of the town of Zomba in Malawi.

The maximum reservoir storage capacity is approximately 3,5 million cubic metres, while the expected water supply is about 400 litres/second.

The works comprise the construction of a main dam, an intake, two main pipelines, a drinking water plant and a drinking water distribution network for a total of 42 km of cast iron pipeline.

The main dam has a crest length of 308.5 meters and a maximum height of 48 meters, for a total volume of 312.000 m3.

The intake consists of an intake tower 27 meters high above ground, and of a U-shaped tunnel 178 metres long.

Two main pipelines, delivery and outlet pipelines, pass through the tunnel.

The drinking water plant has a capacity of 12.200 m3/day.
