PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Bauladu bypass is part of the larger project to upgrade the speed of the San Gavino – Sassari – Olbia line. The Sardinian rail network extends for approximately 1,035km, including 432km of standard gauge single track (with 50km of double track between Cagliari and San Gavino) and 609km of narrow gauge single track. The network, managed by RFI, encompasses the Cagliari-Golfo Aranci backbone (306km), the Chilivani-Sassari/Porto Torres branch (66km), and the Decimomannu-Villamassargia/Iglesias (38km) and Villamassargia-Carbonia (22km) branches. Currently, the network is not electrified and uses diesel traction. The Bauladu rail bypass project aims to improve the performance of the connection by reducing the distance of the section between Paulilatino and Solarussa (currently 19.5km), eliminating sections with gradients up to 25%, and closing four level crossings. The bypass does not include the reinstatement of the Bauladu Milis stop. The alignment of the new bypass was developed in line with the Preliminary Project updated in October 2017, with the sole difference being that the gradient in the Evacuation and Rescue Points (PES) has been increased from 12% to 16%, which is the maximum permitted for the line.
