The project, which is part of the PNRR investments, involves the construction of a new single-track railway line approximately 3.4km long to connect the historic Golfo Aranci–Macomer Line to Olbia Airport. The alignment begins at Km 281+750 of the historic line with a 60km/h junction, terminates at the Olbia Costa Smeralda terminal station, and also includes a link towards Chilivani/Macomer. The new line, while not initially electrified, is prepared for future electrification.

The development of the route includes sections on embankment, a tunnel of approximately 450m (with 215m of natural tunnel), and a viaduct of approximately 900m which houses the station.

The Olbia Costa Smeralda Station, which is elevated to minimize ground impact, will be equipped with two tracks featuring 200m platforms, canopies, a passenger building, and a covered pedestrian walkway connecting to the airport terminal. Four viaducts will also be constructed, named VI01, VI02 (both 45m Paule Longa hydraulic bridges), VI03 (crossing over SP24 and Via degli Aviatori), and VI04 (Station Viaduct).
