PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Bisagno Diversion Tunnel (Scolmatore del Bisagno) is a fundamental infrastructure for the hydraulic safety of Genoa against exceptional climatic events. The project involves diverting the excess flow of the Bisagno stream into a main collector, the flood diversion tunnel, via a lateral spillway intake structure and a system of sluice gates built near the Sciorba sports center. The sluice gates function to partially contain the water, diverting the excess volume into the tunnel while allowing the remaining volume to flow naturally towards the sea. The diversion tunnel, which is 6,650 meters long, will convey the water to the sea outfall at San Giuliano beach. Construction will utilize a service window (approximately 365 meters long, excavated using conventional methods starting from the Ex Canile area) that connects to the main section. The section towards the sea (from approximately PK 0.850 to the end of the tunnel) will be excavated using TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) technology, starting from a cavern and a thrust chamber, each about 100 meters long. The TBM will exit into a pre-existing tunnel section for disassembly at sea. Conversely, the upstream section will be excavated using the conventional system.
